With the closing of my research business ResPeo, I have copied over a handful of case studies evidencing our impact.
Sheffield Mind Gambling Awareness Evaluation
About the Client
The Gambling Awareness Project Sheffield (GAPS), launched in 2022, was a two-year pilot programme led by Sheffield Mind in partnership with the Gambling Commission.
Aimed at protecting young people (ages 11–25) from the risks of gambling-related harm, this initiative explored innovative ways to inform, engage, and support at-risk individuals. The challenges faced by youth, ranging from financial strain to addiction, highlight the urgent need for proactive education and prevention.
Our Role and Approach
ResPeo was commissioned by Sheffield Mind to carry out an independent evaluation of GAPS.
We conducted a mixed methods summative evaluation of the programme, which informed a narrative report that aimed to help Sheffield Mind understand the successes and challenges of the programme.
This involved managing pre-existing secondary data, which included metrics from awareness sessions, outreach activities, and online engagement. Additionally, we designed a confidential staff survey to capture deeper insights into the pilot’s effectiveness.
Key Results and Outcomes
Some key strengths of the programme included the person-centred design of the learning and information sessions for both professionals, and children and young people. Participants perceived the sessions as inclusive and adaptive to their learning and informational needs, with effective engagement and contributions from Experts by Experience.
Areas for further development included improved marketing of the GAPS club to increase uptake rates and leveraging the established online engagement through the website.
Colours of Redbridge Evaluation
About the Client
Colours of Redbridge is a three-year programme of community-led arts and culture in the borough of Redbridge. It is part of Creative People and Places (CPP), a national programme from Arts Council England, where local people decide what culture happens in their area.
They believe that culture is a driving force for stronger communities. They listen to community voices that are not often heard, to build a healthier, happier borough. They aim to help to reduce the impacts of the key issues residents face, such as the cost of living or gaining skills and employment.
Our Work
ResPeo is providing a peer-led participatory evaluation framework through which to evaluate Colours of Redbridge’s work through an Art’s Council England CPP grant. ResPeo’s evaluation is guided by a community steering group, and includes training data collectors and evaluators from within the Redbridge community.
Over three years Redbridge will support Colours of Redbridge’s data collection, and support an ongoing process of analysis, insight, and action.
Reflection
It is a wonderful experience to be working with a community-led organisation on a participatory evaluation, and the project is very dear to us.
Mary Seacole Evaluation
About the Client
The Mary Seacole Programme is the NHS London Leadership Academy’s most popular 6-month leadership development programme, designed in partnership with global experts, recently refreshed and delivered by experienced facilitators to develop your knowledge and skills in leadership and management.
The NHS Academy sits proudly within the NHS People Directorate, NHS England. They aim to help everyone in the NHS discover their full leadership potential and achieve the highest standards in health and care. They offer leadership programmes, lifelong learning and talent scheme offers designed to deliver the NHS People Plan and our People Promise. They have a wealth of experience and passion for leadership, talent and unlocking potential, pushing for the best in world-class learning and development.
Our Work
ResPeo was commissioned by Health Education England and the NHS London Leadership Academy to carry out a mixed methods cost/benefit analysis of the local Mary Seacole leadership development programme.
Our team, led by Juliet Brookes, with the input of Dr Ali Mahmoud, brought decades of experience in education and healthcare management. We used a robust mixed methods approach of an evidence gathering workshop, a survey and financial data analysis. ResPeo has a strong track record of supporting health and care sector. We take a person-centred approach and develop strong relationship with commissioners.
Outcomes
ResPeo delivered both an interim and final report with recommendations for sustainability, income generation, and retention. The report was accessible, easy to read, and used inviting infographics to engage the audience.
Feedback
We received very positive feedback from the client who stated that “ResPeo established what we wanted at the contracting stage, and were realistic about what could be done. For the money and timescale, it was great. For me the report consolidated what I had been hearing anecdotally and is useful to have an external/neutral review of the programme impact” — Jo Betterton, Programme Director.
Universal Healthcare Evaluation
About the Client
ResPeo was commissioned by The Universal Healthcare Network at London Southbank University, a network of senior NHS leaders, community leaders, and thought leaders, who have mobilized to address their concerns about the NHS’s provision of Universal Healthcare. The Network aims to make the reality of inequalities in service provision visible, and to work through how best to secure services that are designed around health needs. To this end, they were running working with NHS West Yorkshire and NHS Sussex Integrated Care Systems to run Innovation and Change Labs in Bradford and Hastings respectively.
Our Work
We conducted a process evaluation of the Innovation and Change Labs helping the Network to understand participants’ experiences of the labs, what had worked well and what had not, what the perceived impact of the labs had been, and how the labs had enabled co-production with communities.
We gathered evidence through a mixed methods approach including: ethnographic observation of the labs themselves as well as briefing and organisational meetings, participant surveys, and semi-structured interviews with representatives of all the stakeholder groups.
Outcomes
We produced interim and final reports in an accessible slide deck format with illustrations and infographics, that outlined the lessons learned to help design future systems change programmes. The work has informed London Southbank University’s National Inquiry Report.
Q Community Evaluation
About the Client
ResPeo has partnered with Picker and HP Solutions to deliver the Picker-led evaluation of The Health Foundation’s Q Community. The Q Community is a member network with the aim of empowering its members to improve the quality of health and social care services.
Our Work
ResPeo’s contributions to the evaluation are primarily focussed on the qualitative design and delivery of interview, case study and workshopped data collection in line with a realist evaluation approach. A large part of this work has included the interactive and multimodal facilitation of member workshops to gather participant perceptions on Q’s impact, strengths and areas for improvement.
The work will culminate in a mixed methods report back to Q in order to use the evidence and our recommendations to develop the community further.
Reflections
The multi-stakeholder process is engaging and our approach has been well received, including feedback from workshop participants such as, “the session covered really good ground.”
Ashfield North Primary Care Network
About the Client
Ashfield North is a Primary Care Network within the Mid-Nottinghamshire Place Based Partnership. There are a total of 51,617 patients registered with the five GP practices in this PCN.
Our Work
We facilitated online and face to face interactive and multi-modal workshops in order to help PCN clinical and non-clinical staff to formulate their needs and priorities and to feed this into the Nottinghamshire-wide primary care strategy.
Outcomes
We produced a report bringing together our findings from the workshops and from conversations with staff, and provided recommendations across a number of clinical and operational areas. We presented our findings back to the commissioners, resulting in us facilitating a final ‘you said/we did’ engagement session with the staff.
It was a pleasure to work with the team to identify strengths & future ambitions for improving population health and working effectively at scale as a primary care network.
Sheffield PCS CASES Mixed-Methods Evaluation Report

We were delighted to collaborate with Primary Care Sheffield to evaluate CASES (Clinical Assessment, Support, and Education Service). This collaboration successfully concluded with the delivery of our final report.
CASES is an elective care re-design programme that aims to reduce the pressure on elective services and makes sure that patients in Sheffield receive their care in the most appropriate setting, from the most appropriate clinician.
The evaluation of CASES aimed to understand the barriers and opportunities associated with the service and its utilisation, especially given that the use of CASES is not mandated for referrals to secondary care. Our innovative mixed-methods evaluation has produced significant findings, which can be found on the PCS blog.
